Old town of Drežnik

The old town of Drežnik is a magnificent defensive fortress from the 12th century that protected this part of Europe from the Turkish empire for 400 years.

Due to its strategically important position, Drežnik often changed owners over the centuries, which left its mark on its walls, but 900 years later it still stands proudly as a witness to the stormy history of this region.

It is one of the few preserved historical attractions of the Plitvice lakes region.

Although it is not possible to explore the interior of the tower in 2023, the location offers a wonderful panoramic view of the Korana River and the surrounding area.

Željava Airport

In the 1950s and 1960s, Yugoslavia built what was then the largest underground military base in Europe at the foot of Mount Plješivica.

Željava Airport is accompanied by many myths, among other things, the locals are said to say that migas fly straight from the mountain.

Facility 505, as it was called, was the most expensive military base in the history of Yugoslavia - it cost more than 40 billion dollars.

Today, only ruins remind of it but bring an inspiring and exciting overview of the history of the area.

Underground "KLEK" complex

The underground facility was lined with semicircular concrete shields, arranged every 10 km, to cushion the impact of incoming munitions. The complex included an underground water source, power generators, crew quarters, and other strategic military facilities. It also housed a hall that could feed 1,000 people simultaneously, along with stores of food, fuel and arms sufficient to last 30 days.

Fuel was supplied by a 20 km underground pipe network connected to a military warehouse on Pokoj Hill near Bihać in nearby Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Former President Tito Summer Villa – ‘’Izvor’’

Villa Izvor or "Objekt 99" , as it is called by the locals, located in a secluded part of the park, was built by Josip Broz Tito, former President of Yugoslavia, after the Second World War. At the time of its construction, it was the most expensive residence of a state president.

The interior was impressive. From the marble stairs to the carpets, to the furniture that remained in some rooms. Its 20 Elite apartments could have guest up the World’s political elite guests, and now unfortunately, Villa remains in ruins and acts as an inspiration of its wealthy history.

Plitvice lakes Waterfalls - Viewpoint

Plitvice Lakes is the oldest and largest national park in the Republic of Croatia. The park is situated in the mountainous region of Croatia.

With its exceptional natural beauty, this area has always attracted nature lovers, and already on in 1949, it was proclaimed Croatia’s first national park. The process of creation of the lakes, is the outstanding universal value, for which the Plitvice Lakes were internationally recognised in 1979 with their inscription onto the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The park is primarily covered in forest vegetation, with smaller areas under grasslands. The most attractive part of the park – the lakes – cover just under 1% of the total park area.

The lake system is comprised of 16 named and several smaller unnamed lakes, cascading one into the next. Due to the geological substrate and characteristic hydrogeological conditions, the lake system has been divided into the Upper and Lower lakes. The lakes end in the impressive waterfalls, with the Korana River springing under the base of the falls.
